Tonto Books wasn’t set up by Lone Ranger enthusiasts nor was it intended to be an ironic slant on the Spanish word for ‘stupid’ or ‘fool’. Tonto’s true meaning is ‘wild one’, which is the ethos behind a ballsy independent that bases its existence on the line ‘You gotta make it happen.’
Tonto Press grew out of an idea formulated way back in 2005. That idea was to help support and nurture writers and value them as an integral part of the publishing industry.
The idea developed. It grew into Tonto Books, which quickly established itself as publisher that knows what it wants and has the initiative to go after it. And, just like the moon and the stars and the sun, it shines on.
Tonto Books is headed by Stuart Wheatman, a media professional with several years of wordsmithery and moving imagery experience in a career that led him from film to teaching, writing to publishing.
Tonto books is not genre specific, but reliant on page-turning edginess, captivating and driven stories, quirky, off-beat, left-of-centre tales with a UK and international flavour. Whether fiction or non-fiction, Tonto Books is interested in manuscripts and ideas that don’t fit the mould but that fit the mould above.
Tonto Books is a member of the Independent Publishers Guild and proud of its authors and its achievements.
